The Buzz about Barre
It also induces a feel-good factor, which makes it addictive. There is deserved hype from people in the know – aka the addicts!
What is it?
It’s a sure way of firing up your muscles and feeling connected with, quite literally, every part of your body. We describe it as a full body work out that fuses the strength work of Pilates with the flow of Yoga and the grace of ballet. Think dancer’s physique with dynamic and expansive movements –to strong Pilates-eque isometric holds and pulses.
What’s involved?
Barre routines will mostly have you moving between a ballet barre and a mat. We’re barefoot at the barre. Some people like to use nonslip socks but they’re not essential as you’re stationed on a cushioned mat. Expect to use small props like balls, hand weights and bands to intensify muscle engagement.
But I’m not a dancer!
You certainly don’t have to be a ballet dancer, or even the least bit co-ordinated to join a class. Barre is beginner friendly. You will soon pick up the basic movements. Remember each class is different so it’s a new experience for everyone.
Is it high intensity?
There are many variations of Barre from the low intensity to the cardio. At Studio Form&Flow we offer variations so you can dial it up or opt to pace your workout depending on how you are feeling. Every instructor has a slightly different approach so it’s a good idea to try a few and find a class that suits your preferred style.
How will Barre improve my fitness?
Barre improves muscle strength and boosts endurance thanks to all those little pulses. It will also help with balance and flexibility. Overall, it will improve your muscle tone, posture and core strength.
How does it feel?
You’re guaranteed a good muscle burn, you’ll even feel the shakes until you build strength at the Barre – that’s all normal. You will also feel a sense of length and limberness in your body.
How often should I be at the Barre?
It depends on what you want to achieve. As with any form of exercise, it pays be regular. If you’re committed to getting into shape, we suggest 3 times/week. If you’re maintaining tone and strength, aim for 2 classes per week. If you’re tight for time, at least one class per week combined with other forms of exercise.
See you at the Barre!
